Ankhila Punjab

Kiran's work also revolves around spirituality, including ancestral traditions and historical sites from the Sikh faith. A moment that reaffirmed Kiran’s passion for centring Punjabi-Sikh identity in her photography was in 2018 while taking photos of a farmer that was working in the fields of Punjab. When he noticed her taking photos, he instantly smiled and asked if she can forward the photographs to him. This made Kiran realize that he may have never been photographed during his daily farm work and as a result, may have never felt that those moments were special or worth capturing. This encouraged Kiran to centre the voices, faces, and roots of Punjab even more. She hopes that her work can provide the space for Punjabi-Sikhs, especially in the diaspora, to feel more connected to their community and homeland.

Kiran Kaur

Vancouver, BC
Kiran Kaur is a Punjabi-Sikh photographer based in Vancouver, BC. Even though Kiran was born and raised in Canada, her parents connected her to Punjabi culture and Sikhi by taking her to Punjab often when she was young. They also taught her how to speak, read, and write in the Punjabi language. As a result, Kiran’s creative work became heavily rooted in her identity as a Punjabi-Sikh woman. Kiran completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of British Columbia in 2019. Currently, she is completing her Master of Social Work at the University of Toronto.
